Beautiful Christmas Celebration-RS Dinner

The theme of our Christmas dinner was a Colonial Williamsburg Christmas. We chose this theme to remind us of the beauty and simplicity of Christmas. We live in busy times but we can choose to simply our lives this holiday season.
We wanted to give each sister a handmade beeswax ornaments. They are made from a replica of a German cookie mold dating back to the 1600-1700's. The pattern is called "The Tree of Life". It is a testament of the goodness and perfect love of God the Father. A reminder that "salvation was, and is, and is to come, in and through the atoning blood of Christ, the Lord Omnipotent" (Mosiah 3:18). In each ornament you will see slight imperfections. Like us we all have things that we need to improve on and through the Lord Jesus Christ we can purify ourselves, just like this beeswax was purified.
If you look at the ornament it is beautiful by itself...but hold it next to a light or hang it in a window and the pattern will become even more detailed. Like us if we let the light of Christ shine through us we are even more beautiful.
We pray you will have a Christmas full of love.
With love,
Farmington 2nd Relief Society.

Home Grown Gourds from the "Gourd Guy" Matt Vance
Floral arrangements also by the "Gourd Guy" Matt Vance.
Michelle gilded her leftover jack-o-lantern pumpkins with gold, bronze and brass metallic paints.. Great way to extend the look of your pumpkins after Halloween.
This is a teepee Michelle made.  She has a teepee trading post set up for the kids on Thanksgiving.  The children can earn tokens by eating all of their turkey dinner and veggies.  They can take their tokens and go spend it at the Indian Trading Post.  There is even a picture of her Indian Grandmother.

We demonstrated cute packaging ideas for giving the gift of food.

Pumpkin Can with Granola
Find a cute metal can and follow the directions on blog below.  If its too tricky to use the transfer method...you can always just modge podge the image on.

MAYFLOWER BOATS
Use heavy stiff felt to make the boats.  I just hot glued mine together and then used orange thread to whipstitch the sides.  You can find your a similar pattern at http://news.holidash.com/2009/10/26/kids-table-centerpiece/    I made mine just straight across at the top.
For the mast...I used a bamboo skewer and printed each childs name on the sail.
I used these for Columbus Day too and had a discovery dinner for my kids.  They had to try and discover new foods.

Peppermint Snow Flake Cookie Mold
Super easy gift to make.  Choose a sturdy cookie cutter.  Melt chocolate.  I find its easiest to melt the chips right in a piping bag and then snip the tip once it is melted and pipe into the cookie cutter.  Let harden.  You can place in freezer for a few minutes to speed up the process.  Then repeat the melting process with peppermint candy melts by Wilton.  Pipe ont op of chocolate layer.  While still wet...add crushed candy cane on top for decor.  Let harden.  you can give the gift directly in the cookie cutter.

Dipped Strawberries in Basket
Now this picture shows goodies in the basket.  We changed ours to dipped strawberries.
Berry baskets can be found in a package of 10 at Zurchers.  Tips on dipping strawberries....DON'T wash the berries...just brush them off with a pastry brush.  Otherwise they start to decay and make dipping harder.

Bread in Coffe Filter
Not too much to instruct.  you can find coffee filters in white or natural at most any store...Target...Walmart...Grocery stores.  Make sure to wrap your bread in plastic wrap first to keep it from drying out.

Cake Platter
Turn a cookie tin upside down.  Add a knob on the top.  Place cake on cardboard circle the size of the inside of the tin.  It helps to keep the cake from sliding around.  You can add little wooden feet to the bottom too.

Cheesecake Trees
Follow the directions on the blog below.  Use popsicle sticks or peppermint candy canes as sticks.  You need to freeze the slices (with sticks inside) before you dip them in chocolate.  Drizzle with candy melts and decor.

This Little Piggy - Our August Night

This Little Piggy Went to Market ~with Shay Morris

We found out that Shay is a talented young mom trying to make ends meet. She gave us wonderful ideas in keeping our money in our own pockets (instead of giving it all away to the store owners)
Check out some of the sites she told us about - they are on the side bar of this blog under Saving Money (click on the one you want and you will be taken to that site)

This Little Piggy Stayed Home ~ Rhonda Robertson, Manon Zaluski, Marcia Young

We heard book reviews of great and uplifting books that will enrich our lives.
See the titles on the side bar of this blog under Good Reads.

This Little Piggy Had Roast Beef ~ Amy Jolley

Amy told us some of her family's food traditions and shared some great recipes with us. She spoke of the importance of sitting down together for a family meal as often as we possibly can.

This Little Piggy Had None ~ Kathy Gibbons

We heard how it is very baaaad to have none in the event of a disaster. We have heard this admonition many times, so it must be very important to listen to and heed. Ask Kathy sometime about their experiences in surviving the Teton Dam Flood.

Michelle shared her 'Back to School' table.  Her girls look forward to a special dinner each year set with a theme (this year's is "be Smart").  They each get school supplies, treats and a card written by mom and dad telling them of their hopes for each child's school year.

We had a wonderful evening full of fun instruction, great decorations, and of course, wonderful food!...
These pigs pictures were found off the internet and printed on old book pages.
I hung them off dead branches stuck in a french urn.
The table cloth is just 3 yards of inexpensive burlap with a muslin ruffle added for more french decor.
The flying pig was found at HomeGoods.  The polka dot box is just a box from the post office covered with wrapping paper.
These lanterns were made from old books found at the DI.
The easiest shape to start with is the cylinder.  Just start with a old paperback novel.  Hot glue a ribbon to the outside of the book along the spine.  Leave it long enough to hang from and tail at the end so you can attatch a crystal of more ribbons.  Then fold each page in half towards the spine and tuck into the spine.  Fold all the pages this way.  As you get towards the end it will get more difficult because it is getting so thick.  Then hot glue the book covers together and you are done.  Then start trying with other shapes.  Fold each corner towards the spine and you get the diamond shape (2 folds per page).  Fold each page in half towards the spine like you did for the cylinder, then fold each corner into a dog ear and you get the lantern shape on the bottom right.  HAVE FUN.
WARNING.  They can get heavy...the bigger the book...the more pages the heavier it is.  So make sure you have something sturdy to hang from.
This was our food table.  For our french oui, oui, oui (wee wee wee) desserts.

And This Little Piggy Went Oui, Oui, Oui All the Way Home!

If you weren't there you really missed out on some great French desserts! We had fruit tarts, eclairs, creme brulee cheesecake bites, crepes with fresh berries, macarrons, cream puffs.  Check out the newsletter for the recipes.

This was our invite.
We printed these at Costco in 4x6 to give to each individual sister.
This was our reminder boards that we displayed by the RS room and the Primary room each week before the activity.  The invite was just printed in a 11x14 with burlap and doileys behind.  This is all attatched to a foam core board from the dollar store cut in half.

Move Over Martha

We had a great time in May honoring the 3 graduating seniors and welcoming them into Relief Society.

Here are our invites
These are our guest of honors.  The graduates of 2012.

THis is our decor....all things bright and fun.  My theme was hot air balloons  with the quote
"Find your Wings and Fly".
I made chefs hats for each of the 3 graduating girls with cupcake liner flowers and their names.  They had to wear them during their cooking demonstration with their moms.

This was their guest of honor table up front and center with tea towel aprons tied to each chair.
Kyra and her Mom showed us how to make yummy desserts

Andi and her Mom showed us a  salad with tasty dressing.

Rachel and her Mom demo a labor intensive German dish.

Our household tips were taught by Ellen...the queen of cleaning.  She taught us how to go green in our cleaning to stay safe and save money.
